FAQ
Questions about therapy at NYIPS
How much does therapy cost in NYC?
Private-pay therapy in Manhattan commonly runs $200 to $400 or more per session. At NYIPS, sessions are $225 to $400 depending on clinician and session type, and we provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement. See fees.
Do you take insurance?
No. We're out-of-network with all insurance plans. Many clients with PPO or POS plans get partial reimbursement by submitting our superbill to their insurer.
What is a superbill?
A superbill is an itemized receipt with the codes your insurance company needs to process an out-of-network claim. We provide one on request, monthly or per session.
Is out-of-network therapy worth it?
For many people, yes. It means more choice of specialist, no insurer-imposed session limits, and nothing shared with your plan beyond what you choose to submit. Whether it pays off financially depends on your plan's out-of-network benefits.
Do you offer online therapy?
Yes. We offer secure video sessions to adults and couples anywhere in New York State, plus in-person sessions in Manhattan.
Why do you accept clients case by case?
Because fit matters more than speed. We review each inquiry to make sure our specialties match your needs. If they don't, we refer you to someone better suited.
What kinds of clients do you work with?
Adults and couples who want focused help with a specific problem: imposter feelings, anxiety and OCD, shame, burnout, estrangement, secrecy, trauma, sexual concerns, or relationship strain. Many have tried therapy before and want something more specialized.
I've done therapy before and it didn't help. Why would this be different?
We start by asking exactly what you tried and why it fell short, then build treatment around what was missing. That might mean a different method, a more direct style, longer sessions, or a team approach.
What is a team approach to therapy?
Your primary clinician consults regularly with colleagues across specialties and can bring in a second clinician for couples, family, or targeted work. You get coordinated expertise without the impersonal feel of a clinic.
Do you offer sex therapy and couples intensives?
Yes. Our specializations include sex therapy and couples therapy, including relationship intensives with longer, concentrated sessions.
Can I talk about sexual thoughts or fantasies I'm ashamed of?
Yes. Unwanted or taboo thoughts, sexual or otherwise, are common and treatable, and having a thought is not the same as acting on it. Our clinicians work without judgment to reduce shame and distress.
Do I have to tell you everything about my past?
No. You decide what to share and when. Many clients start with what's bothering them now and expand only as trust develops.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. What you share is protected by New York State law and HIPAA, with narrow legal exceptions such as imminent risk of harm. Because we're out-of-network, nothing goes to your insurer unless you submit it. See our Notice of Privacy Practices.
How long does treatment take?
It depends on the problem. Focused concerns such as panic or imposter feelings often improve within 12 to 24 sessions; longer-standing patterns may take longer. We review progress with you regularly.
What don't you treat?
We don't provide crisis care, inpatient or intensive outpatient treatment, or substance use treatment. If you need a higher level of care, we'll help you find it. In an emergency, call or text 988 or call 911.
What is the difference between a psychologist and a therapist?
"Therapist" is a general term. In New York, licensed psychologists (PhD/PsyD), clinical social workers (LCSW), mental health counselors (LMHC), and marriage and family therapists (LMFT) can all provide psychotherapy.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask for 48 hours' notice. Late cancellations and missed sessions are charged the full session fee.
